Your Wholesale Racking May be Joined by More Automation in the Coming Years

Has your warehouse started automating? If you haven’t, chances are you will within the next several years. The automated materials handling industry is expected to reach over $7 billion by 2019, a projected growth of 8.1% since 2014. That means more and more warehouses are going to be looking at automation as a way to keep up with the increasing demands of speed from the American consumer. Automation doesn’t have to be a vision of the human-free warehouse with robots zipping around a sterile environment, though; automation can mean a lot of different things, and it can work with your existing wholesale racking and pallet systems.

Many of our customers are automating their warehouses by making it easier for their teams to move merchandise from pick to pack areas, or simply reducing the number of touches that occur before the item is out the door. This may involve something as simple as installing a conveyor belt to move through your warehouse. The right conveyor system can move past your wholesale racking where employees place items ready to ship and out to your packaging area where they are loaded on the truck. You take the human element out of the movement, making it more consistent, less prone to errors, and increasing your warehouse efficiency.

Reduce Touches and Increase Efficiency with a Carton Flow Rack in Your Chicago Warehouse

The number of times a product must be physically touched from the time it’s put into your Chicago-area warehouse to the time you ship it to a customer directly correlates to how efficient your warehouse is operating. The fewer number of touches, the more efficient the warehouse. This can be a helpful measurement in determining if your pick path is operating the way it should be or if there is room for improvement. One of the things many warehouses need to consider is installing a carton flow rack on their pick line to reduce touched in increase speed.

If you are using pallet shelves to store cartons and individual pieces in your warehouse, chances are your employees are touching that project more than necessary. An inefficient pick line might require employees to handle products when opening the pallet or carton, putting it in a carton, carrying it to the pick line, placing it in a work area, assembling it with the rest of the order, and then transferring it to the shipping box. A more efficient process utilizes a carton flow rack. Then they product should only need to be touched twice: once by a employee to stock it on the pick line, and once by a picker when it’s placed in a shipping container. Carton flow racks keep your pick path more organized, too, so  your team won’t need to be cleaning up constantly just to keep their work areas neat, eliminating time wasters and more touches.

DAK Equipment in Chicago can show you more benefits of carton flow racks when you call us. Our team will help you develop the most efficient pick path possible and get the equipment that you need set up in no time. Get in touch with us today to get started!
