Why You Need Accountability for Those Working on Your Industrial Shelves

There is one thing that can kill the safety record and efficiency of your warehouse faster than almost anything else: lack of accountability. Warehouse managers spend a great deal of time setting up processes for their industrial shelves, conveyor systems, and other warehouse equipment. Each process that is put into place is there to help keep workers safe and create a more efficient work environment for the warehouse. However, no matter how good your process might be, it’s worthless if you don’t hold your team accountable.

Accountability has to be a staple of warehouse culture. Allowing someone to neglect an aspect of their job in the hopes that someone else down the line will fix the issue for them will only cause issues among your team and derail any process that you’ve carefully put into place. While you want a team that works together to create a warehouse that moves along efficiently and helps each other out on the job, you don’t want anyone to cover for someone else’s negligence. Encouraging accountability between departments in a non-confrontational or accusatory manner can help create an environment where processes are closely adhered to and employees pay attention to details.

The result will be more organized industrial shelves, a more efficient picking and packing team, and happier customers as their orders get out the door and on their way faster. How Slotting Your Pallet Racks Can Help Increase Your Efficiency

Managing where inventory is on your pallet racks is as important as managing how much of it there is on the pallet racks. That’s because location within the warehouse can have a huge effect on how long it takes your team to process orders and get shipments out the door. Slotting is the process of determining the most efficient placement for your product within the warehouse. It can be a laborious process to get started, but the benefits are just too good to pass up.

For the majority of warehouses, slotting feels like too much effort. Instead, they simply make room on their pallet racks to bring in inventory and get it stored. There are a lot of issues with this sort of crisis-management style of pallet rack loading:

  • You are less likely to use your available pallet rack space efficiently. Instead, you’ll end up cramming items wherever they will fit.
  • Your picking team may have to travel further for items ordered more often because the layout hasn’t been considered.
  • You are more prone to losing inventory. Your system may say it’s in stock but you can’t find it on the shelves.

All of these are major problems for any warehouse. Slotting can greatly eliminate this kind of efficiency by making intentional choices about where you are placing your inventory within your warehouse. It can help your picking team work faster and give you better control over the inventory in your warehouse and increase efficiency by 20%.

How to Make Pallet Racking Installation Easier

Flanged Pallet Racking Systems Support from DAKOne of the biggest projects you’ll undertake in your warehouse is installing new pallet racks. Whether you are replacing old racks or installing a racking system for the first time, it’s a big job, but one that will be well worth it. We’ve installed thousands of pallet racks over the decades for businesses in the Chicago area and across the country, and all of that experience has taught us the easiest way to get the job done. Take some advice from our installation team and put these tips into action to make your pallet rack installation easier:

  • Make a plan. It might seem easy enough to set up pallet racks, but going into the process without a plan will result in a lot more work for you in the long run. Our CAD team can create a floorplan of your warehouse with your new and existing equipment in place to create the most efficient space possible. This shows you exactly where everything should go, where it all fits, and prevents you from having to backtrack on setting up your new pallet racks.
  • Buy quality pallet racking. There are tons of options for pallet racks out there, but they aren’t all made the same. Trying to save a few pennies on a cheaper pallet racking system can end up in disaster. Not only will you be facing repairs on your equipment more often, it will be much more difficult to set up. Quality pallet racking will make the setup process so much easier and well worth the investment in the long run.
  • Prepare your space. Your pallet racking system should be one of the last things to go into your warehouse before your inventory. If you are setting up in a new build, make sure everything else is done to the space, including your fire safety system installed, heating and air conditioning set up, etc. That way your pallet racks won’t be in the way of other system and need to be moved. If you are setting up in an existing space, take the opportunity to clean your floor and the area around where the pallet racking will be setup.
  • Hire a professional team. We’re not just saying this because we have an incredible installation team! This really can take so much of the stress off of your plate and allow you and your team to focus on other priorities. Hiring a professional installation team also ensures that your pallet racking system is set up securely and is ready for your product.

If you are ready to buy a new pallet rack system, get help with a layout, or have our installation experts come do the job for you, DAK Equipment & Engineering is here to help. We’re available in the Chicago area as well as nationwide to give you the service that you need in order to make your warehouse the most efficient system possible.
