How Our Warehouse Consultants Nearly Doubled the Storage Space for This Warehouse

Our warehouse consultants love to help warehouses and distribution centers find solutions to their toughest challenges. It’s what we’ve been doing for more than 25 years and it’s what we plan on doing for at least 25 more. We document many of our warehouse improvement projects in the Case Studies section of our website. This is a great place to read more about what our warehouse consultants can do for your warehouse and how we’ve helped others overcome their warehousing challenges. Check it out and see if there is a case study that inspires you about improving your warehouse!

One of our favorite case studies comes from a film production company. When they approached the DAK Equipment & Engineering team for help, they were running out of space in their warehouse but didn’t want to move or expand their facility. They also had the additional challenge of needing to improve their product flow despite an ever-changing inventory. Our warehouse consultants carefuly evaluated their needs and situation and then developed a workable plan. They knew exactly what to do!

How Our Warehouse Consultants Optimized the Warehouse Layout

First, our team looked at the current layout of the warehouse in order to determine if it was the best use of the space for what the company needed to do. We determined that the warehouse would be better laid out if it was turned 180 degrees; so that’s what we did. We worked with the company to complete the transition in a phased approach. This allowed them to continue working on their projects without a complete shut down of their workflow while we gradually made the shift in their warehouse.

Of course, it took more than moving racks around. They needed new racks and their fire suppression system needed to be updated. We worked with local contractors to make this happen and ensure the warehouse was totally up-to-date on fire codes.

During the work, we discovered that a lot of the pallet racking used in the warehouse was damaged and needed to be replaced. We worked with the company to select replacement racking that would suit their needs and work with their other existing equipment. This helped the company save money where they could while upgrading their racking to a system that should work for them for years to come.

The Results of Our Work

In the end, our team helped this film production company increase their pallet positions from 7,900 to 11,900. That’s an additional four thousand pallets they could store in their warehouse without an expensive expansion or moving their facility. We used drive-in racking, selective racking and wire decking along with our project management services to get it all done.

Additionally, the change in the orientation of the warehouse and the improvement in their layout helped make the warehouse much more productive. The team will be able to fulfill orders and requests in a shorter amount of time, increasing productivity for the entire operation.

That’s a success story that any warehouse manager would be proud of!

All the Info and Benefits You Should Know About Wire Decking

Wire decking is one of the most useful pieces of warehouse equipment you’ll find. We recommend this hard-working equipment to a number of our clients for many different reasons, and they are almost always pleased with their investment. If you’re looking for a way to improve your warehouse, wire decking might be a smart addition to your pallet systems. Here are some of the benefits you’ll get to enjoy!

Ready for These Wire Decking Benefits?

  • It’s fire-safe. A lot of fire marshalls are cracking down on the use of wood to create support within your pallet racks. It’s a horrible fire hazard. Wire decking, though, won’t help fuel the flames, so you can feel good about putting it into your warehouse and staying out of trouble with your local fire marshall.
  • It creates more storage options on your pallet racking. Instead of relying on pallets alone for storage, you’ll be able to safely and securely store cartons and smaller items. This expands the usefulness of your pallet racking and helps you maximize your storage space.
  • It creates great visibility. The wire decking it’s going to block your line-of-sight in the warehouse as much as wooden platforms would, so you’ll still be able to see on your shelves. This can help prevent lost items and help with inventory counting. You’ll be able to look up and down at shelving without losing all of your visibility.
  • You can add accessories. This helps you make your shelving racks even more useful and organized. Look for hanging dividers, carton stops, and so much more. DAK Equipment can supply you with anything that you need.
  • It’s easy to clean. Wire decking can be quickly scrubbed with soap, water, and a wire brush if you need to really get deep-down clean. Or, just hose it off with a garden hose. Most wire decking is resistant to rust so it’s easy to clean. Clean it in place or take it outside and reinstalled when it’s dry!

Find the Wire Decking That’s Right for Your Warehouse

By and large, you’ll be able to purchase just about any wire decking and have it cut-to-size for your pallet racks. This makes it easy to purchase and install wire decking in your warehouse or distribution center. That doesn’t mean that all wire decking is the same, though. Some wire decking is flare decking, which has support channels to accommodate boxes. Inverted channels keep food and dirt from collecting in the crevices. That means that if your warehouse has specialized needs, there is a wire decking for you. For instance, if you need something with low friction, look for eletro-plated iron decking. An upturned-waterfall decking will prevent cartons from sliding out the back of your pallets. There are plenty of options out there; talk to a warehouse equipment expert at DAK Equipment & Engineering to learn more about your options and to find the right wire decking for your needs.

FAQ About Prefab Offices

Prefab offices can be a terrific addition to your warehouse. They can be used in conjunction with a mezzanine system to free up floor space while still giving you the office space that you need to make your warehouse run smoothly. They can also be used as an employee break room, a clean room, or even a space for your industrial lockers. Whatever you need your prefab offices for, DAK Equipment & Engineering has the set up that you need. Do you have questions about our prefab offices? This FAQ can help you find the answers that you need so you get the office space you want for your warehouse.

What are prefab offices used for?

They can be used for so many different uses inside of a warehouse or distribution center. They are a great space for a foreman or your administrative staff. Or they can be used as a break room or meeting room so get the team off of the warehouse floor. They can even be configured and set up as a clean room for your tech or pharmaceutical needs. They can fulfill virtually any need you have for a separate space inside your warehouse.

How long do they take to install?

Most prefab offices can be set up in about a quarter of the amount of time a permanent structure can take. That means less downtime for your warehouse, making this an even more affordable option for your business. It’s less disruptive, too, so you don’t have to worry about the construction getting in the way of your team’s work.

Can I take a prefab office with me to the next location?

Yes! This is one of the biggest benefits of a prefab office. If your warehouse needs to move, you can disassemble the prefab office and bring it with you, reconstructing it in the next location. That means you can get years and years of use out of it no matter where you are located. If you find you no longer need it, many people go on to sell their prefab offices to other locations and making back some of the money they spent on the investment.

Are there any tax benefits?

Absolutely. Prefab offices can often be depreciated on your business’s taxes over 7 years instead of the 39 years it takes for a brick-and-mortar structure to depreciate. This can mean huge savings for your business, which directly goes back to your bottom line. That can be a huge benefit to your business!

What options are available?

Virtually anything you could want. Prefab offices are available in a variety of colors and you can create almost any design you could want. You can even have windows and doors installed where you want them and have electrical and HVAC systems wired up as well. The limit is really only your space and your budget, and our team can help you make sure you are getting exactly what you need. We even have prefab offices that can be installed on your mezzanine for even more space-saving ideas.
