Material Handling - An Automotive Parts Distributor and Retailer - Project Summary

motive1

Project Objective

This distributor of auto parts owns 8 retail locations around the Chicago market. They needed to relocate their distribution center from Chicago for a number of reasons, and chose DAK E & E to assist in making the facility as efficient and productive as possible. DAK E & E measured up the facility that they had chosen and laid out a new storage system with integrated work bench space. The system needed to be installed on an extremely tight timeline. Also, they were requesting a combination "stock put away" and order picking conveyor system be designed and installed.

Project Scope

This project required DAK E & E to design, supply and install the system, which consisted of a bulk storage system in a special color. DAK designed integrated work benches and also designed the system to be expandable in the future - if the customer wished to add a second tier to the system for expansion, then catwalks and an upper level could be bolted on in the future without interrupting daily order picking operations. After studying the feasibility of a multi-use conveyor system for this facility, DAK recommended against it and argued strongly for the use of standard order picking carts. The customer accepted DAK's recommendation and saved $200,000.
