Manufacturer and Retailer Material Handling Project Summary

material handling storage project

Project Objective

This manufacturer of high-quality furniture had been growing at a rapid rate. Its Midwest Distribution Center in Indiana had grown the fastest, and was looking for ways to expand that did not involve the large capital expenditure associated with building a larger warehouse.

DAK E & E proposed a structural mezzanine that would allow the company to floor stack underneath the mezzanine as well as on top. The main challenge was to design and build a mezzanine that fit nicely with the existing building columns, allowed rapid throughput of stock putaway and order picking, and was cost-effective. The expansion also brought about a need for additional office space.

Project Scope

The scope of this project included designing a structural mezzanine with closed staircases, handrail system and cut-outs in the floor of the mezzanine that allowed multiple stock transfer locations. Additionally, the mezzanine had to be installed during a 4 week window in an operating distribution center. DAK chose a Prest mezzanine for its high- quality and structural stability.

A high quality pre-engineered office was required on top of the mezzanine, complete with lighting and HVAC systems for management. DAK chose a Starrco office for trouble-free installation, quality materials and long-lasting life.
