How to Make Pallet Racking Installation Easier

Flanged Pallet Racking Systems Support from DAKOne of the biggest projects you’ll undertake in your warehouse is installing new pallet racks. Whether you are replacing old racks or installing a racking system for the first time, it’s a big job, but one that will be well worth it. We’ve installed thousands of pallet racks over the decades for businesses in the Chicago area and across the country, and all of that experience has taught us the easiest way to get the job done. Take some advice from our installation team and put these tips into action to make your pallet rack installation easier:

  • Make a plan. It might seem easy enough to set up pallet racks, but going into the process without a plan will result in a lot more work for you in the long run. Our CAD team can create a floorplan of your warehouse with your new and existing equipment in place to create the most efficient space possible. This shows you exactly where everything should go, where it all fits, and prevents you from having to backtrack on setting up your new pallet racks.
  • Buy quality pallet racking. There are tons of options for pallet racks out there, but they aren’t all made the same. Trying to save a few pennies on a cheaper pallet racking system can end up in disaster. Not only will you be facing repairs on your equipment more often, it will be much more difficult to set up. Quality pallet racking will make the setup process so much easier and well worth the investment in the long run.
  • Prepare your space. Your pallet racking system should be one of the last things to go into your warehouse before your inventory. If you are setting up in a new build, make sure everything else is done to the space, including your fire safety system installed, heating and air conditioning set up, etc. That way your pallet racks won’t be in the way of other system and need to be moved. If you are setting up in an existing space, take the opportunity to clean your floor and the area around where the pallet racking will be setup.
  • Hire a professional team. We’re not just saying this because we have an incredible installation team! This really can take so much of the stress off of your plate and allow you and your team to focus on other priorities. Hiring a professional installation team also ensures that your pallet racking system is set up securely and is ready for your product.

If you are ready to buy a new pallet rack system, get help with a layout, or have our installation experts come do the job for you, DAK Equipment & Engineering is here to help. 3 Jobs For Your Pallet Racks

Warehouses are filled with pallet racks for a good reason: they work. Pallet racks provide warehouse with a means of storing a large amount of inventory until it’s needed to fulfill orders. Smart warehouses invest in their pallet racks to ensure they have a system that’s reliable, durable, and right-sized to the needs of their warehouse. Pallet racks work hard in a warehouse environment by doing three main jobs:

  1. Keeping inventory organized. It might seem like splitting hairs to worry about how organized your warehouse is, but truthfully it has a huge impact on every facet of your operation. A well-organized, tidy warehouse is able to fulfill orders faster, avoid injuries and accidents, and avoid loss issues. Your pallet racks should help you keep everything in place where you need it.
  2. Keeping inventory safe. Pallet racks are a great way to protect inventory from damage from accidents and human error. Racks are made from steel so they are sturdy and often raised to keep the product out of the general traffic where it can be damaged.
  3. Keeping inventory accessible. Pallet racks aren’t any good if they don’t allow your team to pull the items that they need quickly and easily. So while pallet racks are great for organization and safety, they still need to give teams quick access to the items they are holding on their shelves. The better the access, the faster your team can process orders and get them out the door to your customers.

Without pallet racks, warehouses would be forced to keep their inventory stacked on the floor; and indeed, some warehouses still do this instead of investing in pallet racks. So what issues are they facing without pallet racks? It certainly can’t be very organized, especially if they are dealing with a significant number of SKUs. It’s also unsafe for inventory to remain on the floor, and even more dangerous for workers who run the risk of tipping over stacks, running into products, and damage themselves and the warehouse inventory. And finally, it’s a wreck for accessibility. What happens if the product your customer ordered is at the bottom of a pile? Suddenly, fulfilling that order is going to take much, much longer than it should take.

Thankfully, most warehouses are happily using pallet racks to keep their inventory organized, safe and accessible. What many of them aren’t doing, however, is using those pallet racks efficiently. Many simply fill up their pallet racking system without a second thought. Smart warehouses are paying attention to issues like load limits, group together common items, and rotating inventory on their pallet racks to ensure maximum efficiency for seasonal items.

When You Need Cantilever Racks in Your Warehouse

Cantilever Rack InstallationWhile not as prevalent as many other pallet racks in the materials handling industry, cantilever racks are certainly a useful item in the right circumstances. These racks consist of support beams that use arms to support items. You’ve most likely seen this unique storage solution in warehouse stores. So when are these the right solution for your warehouse?

Primarily, this is the right storage solution when you are storage multiple long items. Lumber, tubing, pipes, conduit and other difficult to store items can all be neatly stored on cantilever racks. The use of wire decking can expand the cantilever’s usefulness, too, and make it great for storing heavy objects of varying sizes, such as furniture. The open front design makes it easy to pick out the long merchandise for use or order fulfillment, too, so there is no need for your pick team to slow down to sort through a messy pile of items to find the right one. Everything will be nicely sorted on each cantilever shelf made with two or more supporting arms.

If you have a difficult to store item in your warehouse and are looking for a solution, cantilever racks might be it. If they aren’t, though, we’ll help you find a solution that is. Cantilever shelves are just the beginning of what we can do for your warehouse! Get in touch with the DAK Equipment and Engineering team to learn more about unique warehouse storage solutions that can fix all of your storage issues today.
